Some of us including myself who had the dream of becoming your own boss. I have been dreaming of wanting to become an entrepreneur but before you can embark on this path. I would like to share it is necessary to have good reasons to become an entrepreneur before one starts the business.
Currently, I run two businesses. The first one focusses on retail that provides haircut to my local community, my company employs around 40 people with 11 shops. The second company only employs a handful of 4 people that provides telecommunication services. Below shows a sample of few shops that I operate in Hong Kong.
What is your company’s mission?
I have been an entrepreneur for the past few years and I must admit it has never been not plain sailing where I have my ups and downs. Being employer, one should know that you cannot never run away from accountability and responsibility.
Mission should be set on higher calling
If I start my business with the sole purpose of earning money in mind then I need to declare to you that I would have been out of business a long time ago. Starting a business requires one that needs to know what is their company’s mission and values. The purpose of setting up this business is to solve problems and providing a service to the community, it goes without saying that the business needs to be profitable eventually. However, I must re-emphasize that making money should never be the sole reason for you to be in business.
In my opinion, if you set up a business with only money in mind then likely your teammates will also be having the same mindset. In the event of your business downturn then I can share with you that you and your teammates will run away from this business or they will try to sell the business the moment it is in the RED!
On the other hand, if you set the company with your teammates for the purpose of solving the problems or providing a service to the community then in the event of a business downturn, there is a chance you and your teammates will still be intact and ride through the storm. The battle will be sweeter once your team overcome the storms. It will make your team stronger and also having this mission or purpose in mind will force your team to focus on why this business was set up in the first place.
Allow me to share some of the examples of good company missions.
Coca-Cola’s company Mission
Our Roadmap starts with our mission, which is enduring. It declares our purpose as a company and serves as the standard against which we weigh our actions and decisions.
- To refresh the world…
- To inspire moments of optimism and happiness…
- To create value and make a difference.
Zig Ziglar’s mission
“To be the Difference Maker in the personal, family, business, and spiritual lives of enough people to make a positive difference in America and the world.”
Good reasons to become an entrepreneur
Having shared the reasons that it is imperative to set a higher calling on your company’s mission and core values. I would also like to take this opportunity to share my sense of purpose in life where I have my own free time to do things that are meaningful in life.
Help poor and needy people
Below are the pictures of my friends (Singaporeans living in a foreign country, Hong Kong) where we make an effort to reach out to poor, needy elderly people via providing necessity basic foods (biscuits, rice, oats, milo and etc).
Leaving a legacy behind for the next generation
