Good Reasons To Become An Entrepreneur

Are You Making A Difference

Dear friends,

Some of us including myself who had the dream of becoming your own boss. I have been dreaming of wanting to become an entrepreneur but before you can embark on this path. I would like to share it is necessary to have good reasons to become an entrepreneur before one starts the business.

Currently, I run two businesses. The first one focusses on retail that provides haircut to my local community, my company employs around 40 people with 11 shops. The second company only employs a handful of 4 people that provides telecommunication services. Below shows a sample of few shops that I operate in Hong Kong.

What is your company’s mission?

I have been an entrepreneur for the past few years and I must admit it has never been not plain sailing where I have my ups and downs. Being employer, one should know that you cannot never run away from accountability and responsibility.

Mission should be set on higher calling

If I start my business with the sole purpose of earning money in mind then I need to declare to you that I would have been out of business a long time ago. Starting a business requires one that needs to know what is their company’s mission and values. The purpose of setting up this business is to solve problems and providing a service to the community, it goes without saying that the business needs to be profitable eventually. However, I must re-emphasize that making money should never be the sole reason for you to be in business.

In my opinion, if you set up a business with only money in mind then likely your teammates will also be having the same mindset. In the event of your business downturn then I can share with you that you and your teammates will run away from this business or they will try to sell the business the moment it is in the RED!

On the other hand, if you set the company with your teammates for the purpose of solving the problems or providing a service to the community then in the event of a business downturn, there is a chance you and your teammates will still be intact and ride through the storm. The battle will be sweeter once your team overcome the storms. It will make your team stronger and also having this mission or purpose in mind will force your team to focus on why this business was set up in the first place.

Allow me to share some of the examples of good company missions.

Coca-Cola’s company Mission

Our Roadmap starts with our mission, which is enduring. It declares our purpose as a company and serves as the standard against which we weigh our actions and decisions.

  • To refresh the world…
  • To inspire moments of optimism and happiness…
  • To create value and make a difference.

Zig Ziglar’s mission

“To be the Difference Maker in the personal, family, business, and spiritual lives of enough people to make a positive difference in America and the world.

Good reasons to become an entrepreneur

Having shared the reasons that it is imperative to set a higher calling on your company’s mission and core values. I would also like to take this opportunity to share my sense of purpose in life where I have my own free time to do things that are meaningful in life.

  • Help poor and needy people

Below are the pictures of my friends (Singaporeans living in a foreign country, Hong Kong) where we make an effort to reach out to poor, needy elderly people via providing necessity basic foods (biscuits, rice, oats, milo and etc).

  • Leaving a legacy behind for the next generation

Also, I have attached a video which highlighted what I shared earlier and I definitely want to leave a legacy behind so that my next generation will follow suit. I sincerely hope my sharing will inspire some of you so that you will find meaning and worth living for.

Before I leave, allow me to share the quote from Zig Ziglar and I treasure this quote all the time.

“You have never really lived until you have done something for someone who can never repay you”.

Well done, what a great article. I have to agree with you there. One must always keep in mind what your vision and mission is. I like to start businesses that fall in line with what I am passionate about. This really helps me keep in mind what my vision and mission is at all times. I think this is vital to the success of an entrepreneur.

Yup. As entrepreneur, we have to strive to keep our core values intact and make a difference while we are still alive.

      Thank you the comments.

An entrepreneur has lots of responsibilities. I agree the starting point is to first help your clients. Without that you will fail with a non viable business model.
Let’s not forget our responsibilities to our employees. If we provide good jobs we will be feeding lots of people. We are difference makers.
I think the entrepreneur who provides jobs can help the poor by providing opportunity. Merely giving away money does not teach people how to fish and fulfill their lives. Is there a better way to help poor people?

Definitely there are ways to help poor people like giving them job opportunities and training if they are teachable. By helping the community, I am targeting the elderly people that are poor and needy where being old, there is disadvantage for them as most of them are around 90 yrs old. It maybe difficult for them to get a job. I’m afraid the elderly truly need our assistance be it small or big way.

      Thanks for the comments.

Well said, very well said. As an average consumer or costumer I can surly say that you just know when people are in for your money or when they are in for you. Reaching out to the poor and people in need is very touching and loving way to give to the community.

Yes, the world needs us to help the poor, needy and elderly people to reach out to them. If we can do a small part to help, why not.

You give a great list of ideas and quotes on why you should be an entrepreneur. One of my favorites is,
“You’re either building your dream or helping someone else build theirs”
People should focus on their own dream and do what makes you happy and not be unhappy working for someone else.

Well said. Fully agree with you on that. Eventually it is working for yourself that will last and not work for someone else who will always take away your credits.

    Hi Stanley

All I can say is well done on your accomplishments. The reasons for becoming an entrepreneur as you put it are the same reasons why I want to become one.

There will always be people that will have a problem and if you can be a problem solver, then you will have a business.

Well said. Most entrepreneurs are problem solvers.

      Thanks for reading my article.

Stanley, loved the video you have on here. I love following people who are successful and not ordinary, and you fit that bill my friend. Thanks so much for making this website, and inspiring me today. Its 8:46am in Utah and what you said moved me greatly, and motivated me. Thanks so much, and I hope you continue to find great success in all you do.

Thanks for the compliments. I am just merely trying to help while I am still alive on this earth. No better joy than this – to help those who are poor and needy. I hope you will also identify your purpose in life so that you can serve others and in return you receive the warmth that money can’t buy.

    Hi Stanley,
I think you are right. Being an entrepreneur is hard work so people need motivation beyond making money (shoot, I can do that by getting a job) to keep them striving for excellence, accountable and engaged. I want to become an entrepreneur to help my family and change its path and future for the better. You’ve accomplished a lot – thank you for sharing from your experience,

We are here to encourage each other to live our dreams rather than living under the shadow of others especially bad or lousy supervisors who can’t lead and let alone having low level integrity and ethics. Yup, step into the world of your own so that you can show it to your family. All the best.
